Austin Interfaces: Reading & Open Mic (June 20)
fields magazine and BookWoman are partnering on a new reading series/open mic called Austin Interfaces! Expect an intimate night of poetry, fiction, music, essays, and an open mic featuring up-and-coming artists in the Austin area every third Thursday from 7-9pm at BookWoman, hosted and curated by Nia KB.
This month will feature the work of local writers Bei Jei Sei , Marilyse V. Figueroa, and Zai Sadler.
貝潔思 or Bei Jei Sei (she/her/hers) is a poet and artist in Austin, Texas and currently attends the University of Texas in pursuit of her Master's degree in Social Work.
Bei Jei Sei has competed as part of the UT Spitshine CUPSI team from 2015-2017 and coached the team in 2018. She is Co-President of the only poetry organization on UT's campus (Spitshine Poetry). She was a Pink Door alum and a 2017 Write Bloody Contest finalist and has been published or is forthcoming in Button Poetry, Write About Now, Muzzzle Magazine, The Dialogoist, Nat. Brut, and elsewhere.
Bei Jei Sei's art has been featured on the cover of Rattle magazine's "Tribute to Poets with Mental illness", on the covers of multiple issues of Crab Fat Magazine, and in Persephone's Daughters. She has designed merchandise and book covers for prominent poets such as Ebony Stewart, Ariana Brown, Joshua Nguyen, and George Abraham.
Recently, she has been working on a zine that discusses social construction of body/ pleasure in relation to rope bondage and kink. She is also working with Nia KB, an amazing Austin poet, on a collaborative zine that will feature her artwork in tandem with KB's literary work.
She spends her time doing kinky shit, writing, studying, drawing, singing, watching Steven Universe, and eating.
Marilyse V. Figueroa goes by them/them pronouns and is a proud queer Xicanx and Puerto Rican from Oklahoma and Texas. They are the Regional Program Manager at Austin Bat Cave and the Director of the San Marcos, Texas chapter of Barrio Writers. Marilyse is currently writing a YA novel in verse.
Zai Sadler is a creative from Austin Texas. She was a nationally ranked slam poet for may years and has been published in multiple online anthologies as well as self published. She has toured all over the country and internationally for over a decade. She has performed poetry/ writing workshops in schools, ages ranging from elementary to college on topics from feminism to self-identity. She has released 2 bodies of music (The EPilogue and Origami) both available on SoundCloud and has self published two chap-books of poetry (Letting the Screen Door Slam and Origami). She grew up listening to all types of music from Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder to 2pac and Jay-Z. She is most inspired by the world around her and the daily mission to be the best creator she can. In a sea of monotony, Zai Sadler tries to challenge herself lyrically and content wise. She is currently working on a shorty story visual “Choosin’” as well as an upcoming one-woman show.
